Vienna Scientific manufactures custom spare and wear parts for your scientific instrument and laboratory tools using a wide variety of materials (plastic to hardened metal), mechanical and electronic components. Reverse engineering can also be useful if you find yourself in need of a scientific tool that is no longer in production, or from a supplier that has gone out of business.

Ideally, we need a blueprint and detail information on the material, or to get our hands on the (broken) part. If the part you want to reverse engineer is not available, you can either send in (parts of) the instrument or agree to a measurement service. What is reverse engineering?

Reverse engineering is the process of discovering the underlying technological principles of a device, object, or system by analyzing its structure, function, and operation. It often involves disassembly and detailed examination of the inner workings. This approach is used in activities such as maintenance or the creation of a modified or new device that achieves the same or improved functionality without directly copying the original source. The primary goal is to infer the design decisions behind the existing product, even with limited or no additional knowledge of the original manufacturing processes. Reverse engineering is thus key in a variety of scenarios, including situations where documentation is lost or unavailable, original spare parts are no longer available, analysis to understand the operation of a specific device including identifying potential improvements, performing security audits, and even for educational purposes. By dissecting an object to understand how it works, reverse engineering enables the replication or improvement of the original object or, more commonly, parts of the original tool. Some literature uses the term "forward engineering" to describe a process in which reverse engineering leads to improved functionality of the original designs.
