MS-190 UHD Minirhizotron Camera. The high resolution MR camera system / UHD root Imager allows a wide range of fundamental or applied plant and soil scientists to capture UHD digital images (up to 2500 dpi!) of roots and the rhizosphere over one or multiple growing seasons. Durable and lightweight, and equipped with an advanced "Smucker" indexing handle (exact vertical & circular positioning), the portable UHD minirhizotron camera system is an advanced version of the traditional, and much relied on Bartz mini rhizotron imaging systems. It is robust and easy to transport to any field location and can be used in rhizotron facilities and for studies in pots and mesocosms. It is equally suitable to image horizontally, vertically and angled root observation tubes up to 500 cm in length and can be factory calibrated to a large range of different tube dimensions. The Windows OS-based ICAP 8 software quickly and reliable allows to set up and follow-up root imaging schedules and locations and handles the naming of images. A Minirhizotron Starter Kit MS-190S (MR camera + tubes + corer) is available to get you started right away.

MS-190 Minirhizotron Camera - Features

  • Fits all MR tubes >5.08 cm (2'') internal diameter (installed at any angle) up to ~500 cm long; fully compatible with BARTZ and MR scanner tubes

  • Imaging capture & processing: <1 second per image; ICAP naming scheme, resized to 20 x 20 mm after distortion correction
  • Operation Unit/User interace: Windows OS Laptop (Lenovo); ICAP software: live pre-view, experiment and imaging programme scheduling (dates and locations), ICAP naming, Settings (resolution, illumination etc.)
  • Image export: via Laptop
  • Interface between UI and camera: HDMI cable, up to 7 m long
  • Power supply: Laptop battery & large internal power bank for hours of continuous operation

MS-190S Minirhizotron Starter Set (Root Imager Starter Set)

MS-190S Starter Set, containing all components needed to set up and run a replicated minirhizotron experiment (i.e. corer, tubes, MR camera system). The competitively priced imaging kit is especially suitable for users who want to start using root imaging to study root system development and turnover, root distribution, mycorrhizal hyphae, or soil fauna in situ, mesocosms or pots.

The MS-190S minirhizotron starter set includes

  • VSI MS-190 Minirhizotron camera, indexing, laptop, ICAP, etc. (as above; MS-190 - "Components"),
  • 20x MR tubes 50 cm (70 mm OD; each with bottom and top end caps, zero position hole pre-drilled), and
  • matched coring kit for MR tube installation (70 cm corer, 68 mm OD). 

Optional:

  • Pre-installed top caps (lids), and glued-in bottom end caps
  • 100 cm long MR tubes (with matched corer = 110 cm)
  • Different MR tube diameter (with matched corer)
  • Light Shielding Foil on the protruding part of the MR tubes
  • Alignment frame, for tube installation at an exact angle

ICAP MR Imaging Software. The software was developed and refined during the last decade by Bartz Technology Corporation and offers the reliable and convenient set-up and execution of MR experiments. We build on this strong base to provide minirhizotron camera users with the software they need to smoothly operate our manual HD minirhizotron camera system MS-190. As before, BTC ICAP will run on Windows OS - making it easy for students and newbies to access the program and to download the images.
